Diane Bird

Obituary

Diane Virginia (Dickerson) Bird passed away peacefully on April 19, 2026 in Bothell, Washington. Diane was born June 27, 1941, in Albion, Nebraska, to Harold Dickerson and Violet (Magnuson) Dickerson.

Preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Teresa (Dickerson) McGinnis and Victoria Dickerson, Diane graduated Saint Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana, where, in 1962, she met her husband-to-be, Michael Dominic Bird, who passed away in 2012.

Diane is survived by and leaves a legacy of love to her four children, Michele Bird (Kevin Collins) of St. Louis, Missouri; Martin Bird (Catherine Marriott) of Noblesville, Indiana; Eric Bird (Colleen Fahey) of Merrillville, Indiana; and Danielle (Bird) Voeller (Phil Voeller) of Kirkland, Washington.

Grandchildren include Naomi Voeller, Luka Voeller, Jane Voeller, Sheryl Flasch (Ernesto Quezada), Lucas Bird, and Ian Bird. Great grandchildren include Jackson Bird, Cameron Bird, Amberly Quezada, Karina Quezada, and Zoe Quezada.

Diane lived in Japan during her husband’s service in the Navy. There they started a family that continued to grow when they moved stateside, residing on the west coast for several years. She and Mike, along with their four children, eventually settled in Shoals, Indiana, on a 70-acre plot of land, where they developed a homestead over several decades, building a house and barn and raising livestock and a large organic garden. Over the years, she also worked in administrative and management roles at National Gypsum in Shoals, and later, with Mike and son Eric, managed Lakeview Golf Course in Loogootee, Indiana. In her final years, Diane relocated to Kirkland, Washington.

A woman of remarkable strength and character, Diane was known to be both hardworking and dedicated. Her commitment to service was evident in her extensive volunteer work: handcrafting baby blankets for the Linus Project; meticulous editing for Kiva, which earned her a prestigious award; actively participating in the Martin County Chamber of Commerce; and being a highly valued volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul.

Diane was also an avid reader and a lifetime letter-writer who cherished the art of the written word. Though her final letter has been written, the care and love she poured into every relationship remain a lasting gift to her family and friends. She will be deeply missed.

Diane was a one-of-a-kind friend. I loved her dearly. We shared a lot and she taught me much. I'll never forget her sweet smile and her genuine laugh. God bless you all. She gave me many recipes and I'm going to start a new batch of her cherished sourdough starter & will think of her every time I use it. 💗

I am so sorry to hear this news. I know Danielle has been a rock for your mom the last few years. We actually saw her a few years ago when we were visiting my sons, Steven and Erik, who both live in Seattle. Thank you for the photos. I really like the one of Miki Su and Diana; I never noticed the family resemblance before. I will always fondly remember our trips to Shoals, as well as Loogootee. She was a very kind and patient woman. Peace and love to all of you, Chris

I became friends with Diane when Debbie Ellis my other friend introduce me to her. She raised goats, I raise goats, and went to her house several times to always be met by that God-awful billy goat she had! That sucker tried to climb in my truck through the windows and chased it and everything else. And Diane will just laugh she thought that was funny. Diane really was a wonderful aunt. Whenever my family spent time with her, she made sure everyone had what they needed. That was quite a memorial the family wrote. I didn't know she was an editor. That's cool. I also didn't know Diane had a great grandson named Cameron. Cameron is my husband's name. I'm glad she has a big family to keep her legacy going.

Diane was among the gentlest of souls that I have ever encountered. The collection of her own poetry that she gifted to Sarah and me were a reminder that angels do exist.

It truly pains me to lose another cousin. I remember well the days that we lived next door to each other. Diane and I stayed in touch over the years and her friendship meant a great deal to me. "Wherever a beautiful soul has been, there is a trail of beautiful memories." May the memories of a life well-lived give the family peace and comfort.
